United Nations University

The United Nations University (UNU) is the academic arm of the United Nations (UN). It bridges the academic world and the UN system. Its goal is to develop sustainable solutions for current and future problems of humankind in all aspects of life. Through a problem-oriented and interdisciplinary approach it aims at applied research and education on a global scale. UNU was founded in 1973 and is an autonomous organ of the UN General Assembly. The University comprises headquarters Tokyo, Japan, and more than a dozen Institutes and Programmes worldwide.

Prof. Susan L. Cutter

Prof. Susan L. Cutter is a Carolina Distinguished Professor of Geography at the University of South Carolina and the Director of the University’s Hazards and Vulnerability Research Institute. She received her B.A. from California State University, Hayward and her M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in 1976.

Her primary research interests are in the area of vulnerability science, where she focuses on what makes people and the places they live in vulnerable to extreme events and how this vulnerability is measured, monitored, and assessed. Prof. Cutter has authored or edited twelve books and more than 100 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters.
