The United Nations University (UNU) is the academic arm of the United Nations (UN). It bridges the academic world and the UN system. Its goal is to develop sustainable solutions for current and future problems of humankind in all aspects of life. Through a problem-oriented and interdisciplinary approach it aims at applied research and education on a global scale. UNU was founded in 1973 and is an autonomous organ of the UN General Assembly. The University comprises headquarters Tokyo, Japan, and more than a dozen Institutes and Programmes worldwide.

Background

Dr Alice Fišer has ten years of experience in communication as well as policymaking in the European Institutions in and outside of Brussels.

She holds a PhD in political science from the AugsburgUniversity since 2003. Her dissertation covered “The accession of the CzechRepublic to the European Union: A Context for Transformation to a Civil Society?”

Afterwards she has started off her career in the Delegation of the European Commission in Prague, responsible for the relations with the Civil Society, the Academics and the Regions in the CzechRepublic. The next step in her career took her to Brussels to work as a parliamentary adviser for a Member of the European Parliament. Here she was working on legislation in regional policy, justice and home affairs. After three years in the European Parliament Dr Fišer joined the European Commission again in January 2008. As a Press and Communication Officer in the Directorate-General for Employment, Social Affairs and Equal Opportunities she was working very closely with the spokesperson of the Commissioner responsible for this portfolio on all related press and media issues.

Dr Fišer is by nationality German and Czech. She is fluent in four languages: German, Czech, English and French.

As the Head of the Communications Unit Dr Alice Fišer is responsible for press/ media relations and communications matters of the UNU Vice Rectorate in Europe (UNU-ViE) and the UNU Institute for Environment and Human Security (UNU- EHS).
