United Nations University

The United Nations University (UNU) is the academic arm of the United Nations (UN). It bridges the academic world and the UN system. Its goal is to develop sustainable solutions for current and future problems of humankind in all aspects of life. Through a problem-oriented and interdisciplinary approach it aims at applied research and education on a global scale. UNU was founded in 1973 and is an autonomous organ of the UN General Assembly. The University comprises headquarters Tokyo, Japan, and more than a dozen Institutes and Programmes worldwide.

UN/ISDR PEDRR 

UNU-EHS is a member of UN/ISDR PEDRR since its inception. PEDRR is a global alliance of UN agencies, NGOs and specialist institutes collaborating with the International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (ISDR). PEDRR seeks to guide, enable and scale-up implementation of ecosystem-based disaster risk reduction measures at global, national and local levels. 

PEDRR Vision:

Resilient communities as a result of improved ecosystem management for disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation.

Purpose:

  • Pooling of expertise on ecosystem management for disaster risk reduction and climate adaptation
  • Promoting and encouraging ecosystems approach in the implementation of Hyogo Framework for Action
  • Clearing house for information on ecosystem management for disaster risk reduction and climate adaptation
  • Guide and assist in the coordination of environmental efforts activities within the ISDR system

    New book shows the power of ecosystems to protect us

    Healthy and well-managed ecosystems reduce the risk of disasters and strengthen our ability to adapt to the effects of climate change, according to a new book launched by the Partnership for Environment and Disaster Risk Reduction (PEDRR). "The role of ecosystems in disaster risk reduction" was co-edited by experts from UNU-EHS, IUCN´s Commission on Ecosystem Management (CEM) and UNEP.
