The United Nations University (UNU) is the academic arm of the United Nations (UN). It bridges the academic world and the UN system. Its goal is to develop sustainable solutions for current and future problems of humankind in all aspects of life. Through a problem-oriented and interdisciplinary approach it aims at applied research and education on a global scale. UNU was founded in 1973 and is an autonomous organ of the UN General Assembly. The University comprises headquarters Tokyo, Japan, and more than a dozen Institutes and Programmes worldwide.

Background

Maria Schwab studied Geography, Environmental Economics and Sociology at the University of Bonn with a focus on sustainable development, climate change and social research methods; her diploma thesis was on the impact of food price fluctuations on rural livelihoods in Cambodia.

Before joining UNU-EHS, she worked as a Research Assistant at the German Development Institute and the Institute for Ecological Economics.

Working Area at UNU-EHS

Maria Schwab is a PhD researcher within the WISDOM project, in the Vulnerability Assessment, Risk Management and Adaptive Planning Section. She works on coping and adaptation processes to climate change related hazards in rural areas in the Mekong Delta.
