PhD Block Course
The PhD Block Course "From Vulnerability to Resilience in Disaster Risk Management"
highlights the complexity and importance of vulnerability and
resilience in the field of disaster risk management. The Block Course
is based on the UNU-EHS key research questions, and covers the following
major themes:

Environmental, physical, social, and economical dimensions of vulnerability

Processes and conditions that have an impact on vulnerability and determine
vulnerability patterns

Methods and models to assess vulnerability
-
Interlinkages between environmental migration and vulnerability
-
Measures and activities which enable shifting from vulnerability to resilience
policy recommendations.
The PhD Block Course is designed for postgraduate candidate in the early stages
of PhD research or about to start their PhD studies and advanced
Master's degree students. Candidates should have a Master's degree
in geography, economics, social science, engineering, anthropology,
environmental and/or natural science or related disciplines, and
basic experience in vulnerability, risk and/or disaster management.
The course is offered every year in collaboration with the University
of Bonn. It is also offered on an annual basis in cooperation with
the University of the Free State, South Africa, and the University of
Novi Sad, Serbia. In order to enroll into the PhD Block Course please consult

Environment and Human Security (UNU-EHS) in cooperation with the
University of Bonn organizes a PhD Block Course entitled “From
Vulnerability to Resilience in Disaster Risk Management”. The course is

The UNU-EHS PhD block course
"From Vulnerability to Resilience in Disaster Risk Management" took
place for the second time in Eastern Europe at the University of Novi Sad, Serbia.
Eight students from Serbia, Slovakia, Nigeria and South Africa participated in
the course that took place
from 27 September until 8 October 2010
