The United Nations University (UNU) is the academic arm of the United Nations (UN). It bridges the academic world and the UN system. Its goal is to develop sustainable solutions for current and future problems of humankind in all aspects of life. Through a problem-oriented and interdisciplinary approach it aims at applied research and education on a global scale. UNU was founded in 1973 and is an autonomous organ of the UN General Assembly. PhD Block Course

The PhD Block Course "From Vulnerability to Resilience in Disaster Risk Management" highlights the complexity and importance of vulnerability and resilience in the field of disaster risk management. The Block Course is based on the UNU-EHS key research questions, and covers the following major themes: 

  • Environmental, physical, social, and economical dimensions of vulnerability
  • Processes and conditions that have an impact on vulnerability and determine vulnerability patterns
  • Methods and models to assess vulnerability
  • Interlinkages between environmental migration and vulnerability
  • Measures and activities which enable shifting from vulnerability to resilience policy recommendations.

The PhD Block Course is designed for postgraduate candidate in the early stages of PhD research or about to start their PhD studies and advanced Master's degree students. Candidates should have a Master's degree in geography, economics, social science, engineering, anthropology, environmental and/or natural science or related disciplines, and basic experience in vulnerability, risk and/or disaster management. The course is offered every year in collaboration with the University of Bonn. It is also offered on an annual basis in cooperation with the University of the Free State, South Africa, and the University of Novi Sad, Serbia.
