PhD Programmes

UNU-EHS´ research works towards forming a policy institute devoted to developing capacity and giving advice to strategy and decision makers. An integral part of UNU-EHS is the inclusion of young scientists within its research. The Institute offers research opportunities for doctoral students for conducting studies towards the completion of their dissertation.

The Doctoral Programme at UNU-EHS is open to individuals interested in working on the global issues of disaster risk reduction and sustainable development. In particular, the programme targets those from developing countries who will apply their newly acquired knowledge and skills to the situations in their home countries. Doctoral candidates work on a specific research topic as members of a project team with regular supervision and mentoring. The Institute offers an international research environment with regular opportunities for presenting results and exchanging ideas in seminars and by attending conferences. Doctoral students are also given the opportunity for professional development.

Please note that the Institute currently does not offer a formal doctoral degree. Candidates are required to enroll in a normal university in order to obtain their formal doctoral degree. For openings for doctoral students please contact the Head of the Academic Section of your interest, and consult our job vacancy page. The Institute does not grant scholarships on a regular basis.
