United Nations University

The United Nations University (UNU) is the academic arm of the United Nations (UN). It bridges the academic world and the UN system. Its goal is to develop sustainable solutions for current and future problems of humankind in all aspects of life. Through a problem-oriented and interdisciplinary approach it aims at applied research and education on a global scale. UNU was founded in 1973 and is an autonomous organ of the UN General Assembly. The University comprises headquarters Tokyo, Japan, and more than a dozen Institutes and Programmes worldwide.

Background

Randa Ahmed holds a Bachelor’s degree in Asian and African Area Studies and Portuguese from Humboldt-University Berlin. During her study programme she focused on the fields of society/transformation and culture/identity. She wrote her thesis on “Islam and Politics in Sudan and its impact on women”.

Prior to joining UNU, she completed an internship with the Institute for Cultural Diplomacy in Berlin where she was a Programme Coordinator. Besides, she worked for six years as a voluntary member of the supervisory board  for a youth organization in Berlin which focused on bringing together young people from different cultural and ethnic backgrounds. During this period she was responsible for the organization of events and logistics, moderation as well as the development of the programme amongst others.

Randa has a German-Sudanese background. Her mother tongue being German and Arabic, she is fluent in English with an advanced level of French, Spanish and Portuguese. In addition, she is a Fulbright Alumna who participated in the Diversity Initiative in 2008 at the University of Kentucky.

Working area at UNU-ViE/UNU-EHS

Randa Ahmed works as Assistant to the Executive Office of the United Nations University Vice Rectorate in Europe (UNU-ViE) and the United Nations University Institute for Environment and Human Security (UNU-EHS) .

In this function, she is responsible for the management of the Vice Rector’s diary, missions and meetings and acts as liaison to different constituents. In addition, she supports the organization and coordination of international scientific events, the international internship programme and various other services essential to the Executive Office.
