The United Nations University (UNU) is the academic arm of the United Nations (UN). It bridges the academic world and the UN system. Its goal is to develop sustainable solutions for current and future problems of humankind in all aspects of life. Through a problem-oriented and interdisciplinary approach it aims at applied research and education on a global scale. UNU was founded in 1973 and is an autonomous organ of the UN General Assembly. The University comprises headquarters Tokyo, Japan, and more than a dozen Institutes and Programmes worldwide.

Risk and Vulnerability Training Course

The annual Risk and Vulnerability Training Course, formerly called Urban Training Programme, targets mid-level professional practitioners to strengthen their capacity in risk management in urban agglomerations. The course is held in the three languages English, French and Spanish on a rotating basis.

  1. 3rd Urban Training Programme takes place in Latin America

    19 mid and high-ranking municipal officers from seven capital cities such as La Paz; Quito; Bogota, Tegucigalpa; San Salvador, Managua, and San José came to San Jose, Costa Rica, from 3 – 12 of December 2007 to attend the Urban Training Programme organised by UNU-EHS with the support of the Federation of Municipalities of the Central American Isthmus, FEMICA, and UNDP-BCPR. |Read more
  2. THE URBAN TRAINING PROGRAMME GOES FRENCH

    Seminar Workshop for Francophone African Urban Risk Experts and Policy-Makers at the Training Centre of Valabre near Marseille, 4-15 September 2006 .

    In cooperation with its French partner in Marseille – Institut de Prévention et de Géstion des Risques Urbains (IPGR) – UNU-EHS is staging the second Seminar Workshop for Urban Risk Managers and Experts within the framework of the Institute’s Urban Training Programme (UTP) . The venue chosen for this event is the ‘ École d’Application de Sécurité Civile (ECASC) ’ located in the French Provence. The seminar workshop shall span from 4 to 15 September 2006 . |Read more

  3. The First Workshop within the Urban Training Programme Successfully Completed

    International participants from seven cities throughhout the world attended the workshop, which aimed at strengthening the capacity of municipality personnel dedicated to disaster response in urban centers and cities. Through the exchange of the experience stemming from both developing and a developed country the participants improved their knowledge on what causes and aggravates flooding and what needs to be done to improve their situation at home: how to mitigate the impact of floods through city planning, early warning, and the implementation of flood protection measurements. |Read more

  4. :21 November - 8 December 2005: Urban Training Programme

    Many cities around the world are facing frequent disasters associated with floods. In some cases, such floods are a consequence of poor drainage systems and usually do not last more that a few hours. However, some cities located in flood plains experience floods as a consequence of torrential rains associated with storms and hurricanes or typhoons which overwhelm the capacity of the river channels, provoking losses of various kinds. In other cases, the lack of urban planning has led to the narrowing of a river leading to floods lasting up to several days. |Read more
