United Nations University

The United Nations University (UNU) is the academic arm of the United Nations (UN). It bridges the academic world and the UN system. Its goal is to develop sustainable solutions for current and future problems of humankind in all aspects of life. Through a problem-oriented and interdisciplinary approach it aims at applied research and education on a global scale. UNU was founded in 1973 and is an autonomous organ of the UN General Assembly. The University comprises headquarters Tokyo, Japan, and more than a dozen Institutes and Programmes worldwide.

Prof. Dr Torsten Schlurmann

e-mail: schlurmann (at) ehs.unu.edu

BACKGROUND

Torsten holds a diploma degree (MSc) in Civil Engineering and conducted his PhD at the Bergische University Wuppertal, Germany, with a thesis on extreme water waves (freak waves) and numerical simulations of nonlinear wave propagations in mid 1999. He has a broad expertise in the disciplines of coastal engineering and protection measures, hydraulic engineering, water resources and hydrology. In early 2005, he completed the process of a Habilitation and since then possesses a so-called “Privatdozentur (PD)” (Readership) in Hydraulic Engineering and Water Resources in Civil Engineering that enables him to award PhD degrees to scholars in the respective field.

He conducted basic and applied research projects in the disciplines of Coastal Engineering and Water Resources, published extensively in refereed journals and has more than 12 years experience in lecturing at undergraduate and graduate level, as well as supervising PhD candidates. He gave a vast number of presentations at national and international workshops and chaired sessions at conferences. Torsten was a long-term visiting scholar at the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, and achieved various short-term research visits at other academic institutions.

He joined the Leibniz University Hannover in March 2007, Germany, to take over the chair and vacant director post of the renowned Franzius-Institute for Hydraulic, Waterways and Coastal Engineering. He remains closely attached to UNU-EHS as Project Director for two main research projects and Senior Academic Adviser to the institute.

WORKING AREA AT UNU-EHS

At UNU-EHS, Torsten continues to support the Institute’s role in the German Indonesian Tsunami Early Warning System (GITEWS), especially in the associated capacity building work package and in a recently granted project called “Last-mile – Evacuation”. In addition, he is a member of ICG's workgroup on "risk and vulnerability assessment" for the set-up of an end-to-end tsunami early warning system in the Indian Ocean under the co-ordination of IOC-UNESCO.

Torsten is focal point for:

  • Environmental risks; particularly flood-related hazards in flood plains, estuaries and deltas;
  • Inundations in coastal zones and the adjacent hinterland;
  • Tsunamis, storm surges and coastal protection measures;
  • Integrated coastal zone management (ICZM), Governance issues in integrated flood risk management.

PROJECTS

  • German Indonesian Tsunami Early Warning System (GITEWS)
  • Numerical Last-mile Tsunami Early Warning and Evacuation Information System (Last-mile – Evacuation)
