United Nations University

The United Nations University (UNU) is the academic arm of the United Nations (UN). It bridges the academic world and the UN system. Its goal is to develop sustainable solutions for current and future problems of humankind in all aspects of life. Through a problem-oriented and interdisciplinary approach it aims at applied research and education on a global scale. UNU was founded in 1973 and is an autonomous organ of the UN General Assembly. The University comprises headquarters Tokyo, Japan, and more than a dozen Institutes and Programmes worldwide.

UNU-EHS Risk Management Expert invited by Guatemalan Council

The National Science and Technology Council of Guatemala invited Guatemalan scientists working abroad for the CONVERCIENCIA international scientific event taking place in July 2007 in Guatemala.

Among them, Dr Juan Carlos Villagrán de León, Head of the Risk Management Section at UNU-EHS, who during the scientific sessions will talk about the subject of risk reduction and early warning management with regard to natural disasters in Guatemala. He will also refer to the importance of information for decision-making within the context of disasters and the monitoring of the emission of radon, a noble radioactive gas found at the Guatemalan Pacaya volcano.
