United Nations University

The United Nations University (UNU) is the academic arm of the United Nations (UN). It bridges the academic world and the UN system. Its goal is to develop sustainable solutions for current and future problems of humankind in all aspects of life. Through a problem-oriented and interdisciplinary approach it aims at applied research and education on a global scale. UNU was founded in 1973 and is an autonomous organ of the UN General Assembly. The University comprises headquarters Tokyo, Japan, and more than a dozen Institutes and Programmes worldwide.

Background

Thomas holds a doctoral degree in education from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, USA, and undergraduate and graduate degrees in social education and oriental studies from the Cologne University of Applied Sciences and the University of Cologne, respectively. He has worked as a post-doctoral fellow at the Bridgewater State College, USA. Before joining UNU-EHS, Thomas was leading the Capacity Strengthening Department of the International Potato Center (CIP) in Lima, Peru. His work experience also includes work placements in Sub-Saharan Africa and Indonesia with a focus on adult education, instructional technology and participatory development communication.

Working Area at UNU-EHS

Thomas is responsible for managing the GITEWS project together with Evalyne Katabaro. His activities include the conceptual design and co-ordination of the UNU-EHS PhD programme, the design and co-ordination of training courses for mid-career professionals, as well as the development of training materials and e-learning. His research interests focus on learning objects, instructional design and open and distance education.
