UNU-EHS and UN-SPIDER Co-organised a Disaster Management Workshop in Bonn
The workshop, which took place from 29-30 October 2007 in Bonn, gathered experts together to convey a new impetus to the role of remote sensing in disaster management and seek the involvement of the widest possible range of relevant players. At the same time, during the first day of the workshop, the new office of United Nations Space-based Information and Solutions for Disaster Management and Emergency Response (UN-SPIDER) was celebrated.
The workshop has been organised jointly by OOSA and DLR along with the UNITED NATIONS UNIVERSITY Institute for Environment and Human Security (UNU-EHS), the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), the United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction and Platform for the Promotion of Early Warning (UN/ISDR-PPEW), the Group on Earth Observations (GEO), and the German Committee for Disaster Reduction (DKKV).
The new UN-SPIDER office, founded by the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (OOSA) and the German Aerospace Center (DLR), is supported by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology of the Federal Republic of Germany. The Bonn office will focus on providing universal access to all countries and all relevant international and regional organisations to all types of space-based information and services relevant to disaster management to support the full disaster management cycle by being a gateway to space-based support. Furthermore, it is aimed at serving as a bridge to connect the disaster management and space communities as well as facilitating capacity-building and institutional strengthening, in particular for developing countries. |
