United Nations University

The United Nations University (UNU) is the academic arm of the United Nations (UN). It bridges the academic world and the UN system. Its goal is to develop sustainable solutions for current and future problems of humankind in all aspects of life. Through a problem-oriented and interdisciplinary approach it aims at applied research and education on a global scale. UNU was founded in 1973 and is an autonomous organ of the UN General Assembly. The University comprises headquarters Tokyo, Japan, and more than a dozen Institutes and Programmes worldwide.

Background

Jan studied mathematics and genetics and received his diploma from the University of Düsseldorf. He has worked for a bioinformatic project about halophilic Archaea and different microbial organisms (www.halolex.mpg.de; www.migenas.org). Before he got involved in the TRANSFER project, he was dealing with the evaluation of tsunamis within a flood project of the German Civil Protection Agency (BBK) regarding the rivers Rhine and Saale.

Working Area at UNU-EHS

As a Research Associate at the UNU-EHS, Jan is working in the Vulnerability Assessment Section and is currently involved in the TRANSFER project. He is the statistical analyst at the UNU-EHS.
