WISDOM 1st PhD Scientific Seminar Takes Place in December 2007 at UNU-EHS

On 19-21 December 2007 UNU-EHS organized and hosted the first Scientific Seminar of the German-Vietnamese WISDOM project in Bonn.

The seminar was designed to serve four main objectives:

  • Scientific exchange between project scientists, PhD Researchers and external experts. Keynote presentations were given by four guest speakers from the international community (Prof. E. Plate, Prof. H. Stolpe, Dr. R. Few, Dr. B. Affeltranger) who have long-lasting research experience in the Mekong Delta and who are heavily involved in other ongoing scientific projects in the region.
  • The PhD Researchers of the four research groups within WISDOM (Hydrological/Hydraulic Processes; Water, Policies & Knowledge Management; Water Quality; Water, Livelihoods & Vulnerability) presented their research outlines.
  • Brainstorming sessions between the PhD Researchers helped to exchange expertise as well as to determine requirements in terms of internal data exchange. This paved the way for fostering synergies between the natural and social scientists.
  • Organizational matters were coordinated, including progress reports of the different work packages and fine-tuning regarding the coordination of fieldwork sites and schedules.

Discussions concerning scientific and organizational matters enhanced the exchange within WISDOM as well as with the outside scientific community working in the Mekong Delta. A report on the Seminar is currently being prepared and will be circulated in February. The next scientific seminar is going to take place in the second half of 2008 in Vietnam.
