UNU-EHS Organises a Seminar for GI-TEWS PhD Candidates

In March 2008 UNU-EHS organized and hosted a three-day seminar for PhD candidates within the GITEWS project. The overall goal of the PhD seminar was to provide a forum for research exchange.

The main objectives of the seminar were

  • to establish scientific exchange between the PhD researchers, project scientists and external experts;
  • to provide a presentation platform for the PhD researchers to introduce their research topics and preliminary results;
  • to plan and coordinate the upcoming meetings such as the upcoming GITEWS annual meeting in Potsdam in April; and the next GITEWS seminar planned for November 2008.

During the seminar the candidates presented their topic areas within the respective work packages. The areas represented were seismology; multi-hazard warning and mitigation; as well as tsunami modeling.

The PhD seminar drew the attention of the broadcasting company Deutsche Welle. Deutsche Welle conveys German and other positions on important issues to people abroad and provides a forum for a dialogue between cultures and peoples. Some of the PhD candidates were interviewed by Ayu Purwaningsih, an Indonesian journalist. She was enquiring about the GITEWS project and the involvement of the students.
