UNU-EHS Opens an Office for MCII in Bonn
The office in Bonn will be hosted by the United Nations University Institute for Environment and Human Security (UNU-EHS) and will be situated at the UN Campus in Bonn. The MCII office at UNU-EHS will help to promote innovative and equitable risk management solutions especially for developing countries in a new era of climate risks.

Initiative
Climate change brings with it an increased frequency and intensity of destructive climate-related events such as hurricanes, tropical storms, droughts and tornadoes. Climate change also brings more gradual systemic change such as sea level rise. The physical and financial devastation caused by these changes is most heavily borne by the poor, especially those in developing countries. These vulnerable groups lack sufficient risk management tools including insurance to protect them from the harsh consequences of a rapidly changing climate.
The precise role of insurance in an adaptation regime is still, however, largely undetermined. A great deal of attention has focused recently on experience emerging from piloted public-private micro-insurance systems that protect the poor in highly vulnerable developing countries against droughts, floods and other climate-related extremes.
To address these pressing needs, the Munich Climate Insurance Initiative (MCII) was founded by insurers, climate change and adaptation experts, NGOs, and policy researchers in response to the growing realization that insurance solutions can play a role in adapting to climate change, as suggested in the Framework Convention, the Kyoto Protocol and, most recently, the Bali Roadmap.
