UNU-EHS Workshop Establishes Environmental-Induced Migration Alliance

Experts at Research Workshop on Migration and Environment identify a global agenda studying the effects of climate change on migration.

In an effort to better understand the connection between environmental degradation and migration, experts from four major international institutes, including the United Nations University Institute for Environment and Human Security (UNU-EHS), have established the Climate Change, Environment and Migration Alliance during a meeting of researchers in April 2008 in Munich, Germany.

The UNU-EHS has identified several hotspots around the world, particularly in Asia, Africa, and South America, which demonstrate human migration due to conditions brought on from environmental degradation. The purpose of the Climate Change, Environment and Migration Alliance will be to conduct research and raise awareness about environmentally induced migration with hopes of mainstreaming the concern of environmental migration among international organizations.

Participants at the Research Workshop on Migration and Environment, organised by the UNU-EHS, in conjunction with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and hosted by the Munich Re Foundation (MRF), also gathered in Munich to discuss research measuring migration and its link to environmental damage. The workshop aimed to strengthen and prioritize a global research outline about the implications of climate change and migration and took place from 16-18 April 2008 in Munich, Germany.
