United Nations University

The United Nations University (UNU) is the academic arm of the United Nations (UN). It bridges the academic world and the UN system. Its goal is to develop sustainable solutions for current and future problems of humankind in all aspects of life. Through a problem-oriented and interdisciplinary approach it aims at applied research and education on a global scale. UNU was founded in 1973 and is an autonomous organ of the UN General Assembly. The University comprises headquarters Tokyo, Japan, and more than a dozen Institutes and Programmes worldwide.

Background

Vilma Hossini (neé Liaukonyte) is originally from Lithuania and graduated in Civil Engineering at the Technological University of Kaunas, LT, with a special emphasis on precise instruments for mechanical engineering. She gained experience in different working environments, in particular assisting the chairman of the management board of the company ALGA in Lithuania in the field of shares exchange management and controlling. Prior to UNU-EHS, she worked at the Financial Engineering department of the caesar (center of advanced european studies and research) Foundation in Bonn on Reporting on Roadmaps of the Scientific research groups for the Scientific Advisory Council and Science Council, while studying Economics at the University of Bonn, Germany. Vilma has eight years of experience in training, educational research and project management in an international context. She is a fluent speaker of Lithuanian, Russian, German, English, and Dutch, with basic knowledge of Farsi.

Working Area at UNU-EHS

As Educational Programme Associate, Vilma Hossini contributes to the Institute’s work within capacity-building and development areas. This includes strategic planning, the organization and implementation of trainings, curriculum development, organization of international workshops, design and delivery of courses in an international concept.

Main focus:

  • Since 2005 organization, coordination, implementation and evaluation of the PhD Block course "From Vulnerability to Resilience in Disaster Risk Management" in cooperation with the University of Bonn, Germany, and the University of the Free States, Disaster Management Training and Educational Centre for Africa (DiMTEC) , Bloemfontein, South Africa

  • Since 2010 UNU-EHS internship coordinator

  • Management of the UNU-EHS Alumni network

  • Since 2007 organization of Bonn Dialogues series on Global Environmental Change

  • Development and implementation of online learning activities, www.ehs.unu.edu/elearning. This includes administration and maintenance of learning management system (LMS), compilation and preparation of training materials for online delivery

  • Development and implementation of knowledge management and knowledge sharing workflows and tools for training activities (research forum, research stay, research visit).
