The United Nations University (UNU) is the academic arm of the United Nations (UN). It bridges the academic world and the UN system. Its goal is to develop sustainable solutions for current and future problems of humankind in all aspects of life. Through a problem-oriented and interdisciplinary approach it aims at applied research and education on a global scale. UNU was founded in 1973 and is an autonomous organ of the UN General Assembly. The University comprises headquarters Tokyo, Japan, and more than a dozen Institutes and Programmes worldwide.

Symposium on Highlands and Drylands marks UNU Council Meeting and 5 Year Anniversary of UNU in Bonn

The United Nations University in Bonn marks its 5 year anniversary and the hosting of the 55th Council Members meeting with an open scientific symposium entitled “Sustainability at the Margins: Highlands and Drylands” on 3 December 2008 at the University of Bonn from 6.30 pm in lecture hall 1, main building, Regina-Pacis-Weg 3. ALL WELCOME!

A number of international UNU and other experts in the field will give short presentations about their research on drylands and highlands by talking about topics such as water, desertification and other related issues.

Amongst the speakers are the Vice Rector of the United Nations University in Tokyo, Prof. Dr. Kazuhiko Takeuchi, and the Rector of the University of Bonn, Prof. Dr. Matthias Winiger. Further, presentations will be given by Senior Academic Programme Officer at ViE at UNU in Bonn, Prof. Dr. Libor Jansky, and the Director of the International Network on Water, Environment and Health at the United Nations University, Canada, Dr. Adeel Zafar, as well as by Elysabeth David from the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification, Bonn.

The 55th Session of the Council Meeting from 3-6 December is hosted by the Vice Rectorate in Europe of UNU in Bonn where it is to happen for the first time. The session takes place alternately in the UNU headquarters in Tokyo, a developing and a developed country. At the annual meeting the Council Members discuss the previous year and decide on future projects and budgets of the university.

The “Highlands and Drylands” event is organised as part of the yearly day “Dies Academicus” of the University of Bonn at which students and the public can listen to free lectures on a variety of topics to get an insight into current debates within disciplines.
