UNU Signed Memorandum of Understanding with University of the Free State

The University of the Free State (UFS) in South Africa and the United Nations University (UNU) signed a Memorandum of Understanding for joint research and capacity development on 25 September 2009 at the UN Campus in Bonn. The signing representatives were Prof. Herman Van Schalkwyk, the Dean of the Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences at UFS, and Prof. Konrad Osterwalder, Rector of the UNU.
The parties share substantial areas of common interest and objectives. They agreed to cooperate and coordinate closely on capacity development programmes.
The mission of UNU is to contribute, through research and capacity development, to efforts to resolve the pressing global problems that are the concern of the United Nations, its peoples and member states.
One of the main targets of UFS is the establishment of scholarships. UFS creates, integrates, applies and transmits knowledge by promoting an academic culture, critical scientific reflection, relevant scientific education, pure and applied research, community service, and the development of the student body.
Within the framework of the Memorandum of Understanding, the UFS Disaster Management Training and Education Centre for Africa (DiMTEC) will collaborate with the United Nations University Institute for Environment and Human Security (UNU-EHS), a UNU research and training programme.
UNU-EHS undertakes research and advanced training including the preparation of Master programmes and graduate education. The institute disseminates knowledge on the inter-linkages between environmental disasters, human actions and human security.
The main objective of DiMTEC is to provide training to postgraduate students and to undertake research in disaster risk management in order to actively contribute to disaster reduction efforts as constituted in the United Nations’ Hyogo Declaration of January 2005 and the Hyogo Framework of Action.
UNU-EHS and DIMTEC agreed on developing a joint curriculum, short courses, workshops and seminars, and to strengthen joint research by exchanging research material and other information.
The signing of the agreement took place during the VI Meeting of the UNU-EHS Advisory Committee at UNU-EHS in Bonn.
At that time, the delegation from South Africa was visiting UNU-EHS and other partner institutions, amongst them the University of Bonn, UN-SPIDER and DKKV.
The delegation consisted of: Prof. V. Schalkwyk, Dean, Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences; Prof. Seaman, Director, Environmental Management; Prof. Ingrid Dennis, Director, Ground Water Studies; Chris Swiegers, engineer and specialist in Water Related Disaster Management; M. Tau, Director, Capacity Building and Research, National Disaster Management Center; A. Jordaan, Director, Disaster Risk Management Training and Education Centre for Africa (DiMTEC).
