Dear UNU-EHS newsletter subscriber,

First of all we would like to thank you all for your interest in the work of UNU-EHS and for your patience in waiting for the first issue of our newsletter.

We put a lot of effort into this little project, which turned out to be not as little as expected, and are happy to present today the first outcomes.

On behalf of the entire team of UNU-EHS we hope you will enjoy reading the latest events, developments, academic outcomes and publications of the Institute that from now on will be distributed to you on a quarterly basis.

* UNU-EHS MOVES TO THE UN CAMPUS

From 1st of July UNU-EHS can be found in the new UN Campus at the
"Langer Eugen". Our Institute occupies three floors at the Langer
Eugen:26; 27 and 28 floor. UNU-EHS Academic Officers can be found at
the 26 floor; Resident Scholars, the training room, the library as
well as the archive are placed at the 27 floor; to contact the
Director, the reception area, academic support and/or the administration
please visit the 28 floor.

* SECRETARY GENERAL KOFI ANNAN AND CHANCELLOR ANGELA MERKEL OPEN OFFICIALLY THE UN CAMPUS

The Secretary-General and the Chancellor opened the UN Campus in Bonn that
will now house all the United Nations agencies working in Bonn. After
a ceremony at the Plenary Chamber in the Bonn Bundeshaus with opening
words by Federal Minister Sigmar Gabriel, Lady Mayor Bärbel
Dieckmann, by State Chancellery Minister Michael Breuer; and speeches
by Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel and Secretary General Kofi Annan
the ribbon was officially cut in front of the former "Langer Eugen".

* SOURCE NO. 4/2006: NEW ISSUE COMING IN AUGUST 2006

UNU-EHS is happy to announce a new issue of our publications series
SOURCE that will be released by the middle of August 2006. SOURCE No.
4 with the title Vulnerability: A Conceptual and Methodological
Review deals with the complex problematic of vulnerability
assessment today and has been written by one of our staff members, the
Academic Officer Dr. Juan Carlos Villagrán de León. The publication
offers a review of different ideas, concepts and methods developed in
the recent years of research to capture vulnerability at different
scales, as well as of proceedings and possibilities in the field of
vulnerability assessment.

Dr. Villagrán is specialized in Risk Reduction and Early Warning and has
been active in the past in projects in Sri Lanka and Indonesia.

* SOURCE NO. 3: "INTERNATIONAL ENVIRONMENTAL GOVERNANCE. ISSUES, ACHIEVEMENTS AND PERSPECTIVES" BY ANDREAS RECHKEMMER

Environmental awareness and the political will to rehabilitate and to
protect ecosystems, have certainly been growing since their inception
1970. This development can be followed in a series of large,
intergovernmental conferences. Programmes, conventions, their
governing organs and secretariats together with national ministries
and environmental agencies can be identified as the most important
instruments of environmental governance.

* UNU-EHS EXHIBITS SUCCESSFULLY AT THE 8TH WATER SYMPOSIUM IN CANNES

Under the auspices of UNESCO and organised by the Water Symposium Organisation
Committee along with the University of Nice-Sophia Antipolis, and
supported by several French authorities and private companies, UNU-EHS
was one of the exhibitors at this symposium which takes place every
year in late in June at the Palais des Festivals et de Congrès in
Cannes, Cote d'Azur.

* UNU-EHS WAVE FLUME ATTRACTS BIG AUDIENCE AT WISSENSCHAFTSNACHT

The Bonner Wissenschaftsnacht, a night festival of science held every summer,
is a project funded by the City of Bonn and the Regional Councils of
the neighbouring Rhein-Sieg and Ahrweiler districts. Co-organisers are
local public and private sector entities such as the University of
Bonn, the German Museum, the General-Anzeiger, Bonn's daily
newspaper, and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Rhein-Sieg
Region. Aim of this event is to inform the general public of the
region's relevance as a centre of scientific excellence and to
arouse the interest of young people in science.
